I wonder whether we politicos, insiders find it a bit trite, but normal people do actually get it, feel it relates to them.

It certainly isn't about squeezed middle. It is certainly pointing more at the lower end of the wage spectrum.

As for him avoiding these sort of phrases before the election, I am far happier with "Alarm Clock Britain" than I am with "Yaboo politics" or "Tweedledum Tweedledee" or "Blue Red Red Blue" or other pendulum references.Sanjay Samanihttp://sanjaysamani.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-34128264.post-43868167290766808982011-03-24T11:53:30.054+00:002011-03-24T11:53:30.054+00:00It embodies exactly the kind of rhetoric that he w...It embodies exactly the kind of rhetoric that he was so good at avoiding in those TV debates. Now he's in govt. some PR goon has obviously got to him and explained that voters are actually less intelligent than toenail-scrapings and need one of these utterly pathetic soundbites to float to the top of every policy like chunky sewage, giving you a nasty taste in the mouth and sadly reminding you it's Lib Dem.Jonathan Kingnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-34128264.post-41624955951201636332011-03-24T02:30:17.032+00:002011-03-24T02:30:17.032+00:00I agree - I can't stand the term. If you think about it, it encompasses just about everyone from Richard Branson right through to the poor OAP who religiously sets his clock for 7am, despite being retired for 20 years. I wish Clegg wouldn't keep spouting such nonsense.Bernard Salmonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16756716991445396009noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-34128264.post-72123636318441565232011-03-23T23:46:21.958+00:002011-03-23T23:46:21.958+00:00Horrible Middle Englander soundbite politics from ...Horrible Middle Englander soundbite politics from Clegg. Anyway, I'm sick of hearing about "the squeezed middle" - I dread to think what he and his new Tory chums have in mind for "the crushed bottom" (and no, that's not a reference to any practices they may have once indulged in in a public-school dormitory ;) )Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-34128264.post-77432037544868830312011-03-23T22:05:53.067+00:002011-03-23T22:05:53.067+00:00I quite like it.
