The Way Forward

Now that we've all had a chance to sleep on the unfortunate events of yesterday, I would like to suggest a way forward to move on.

First, Chris and Nick need to have a conversation. I don't want to know the gory details, but I want to see some sort of statement that the issues are resolved between them and that Nick has withdrawn his complaint. I want to see some recognition on Chris' part that the release of the document and his behaviour on the Politics Show. I don't want to see grovelling, just a bit of grown up responsibility taking.

End of story.

Well, not quite the end of the story.

Norman, the post you mention is very funny and well written, but I don't agree with it. Nick will perform well against the media and the opposition, but the rules for an internal election are different.

Chris' behaviour was in my view worthy of complaint. His tactics were well out of order. You expect an internal election to be conducted in a civilised manner because you know that if you dish dirt at your opponent, it will be thrown back at you by the real opposition.

My concern about this is that it will have affected relations between the two men permanently. Someone needs to intervene to get it all back on track because the Party needs both of them in prominent rules. My dream ticket for the US elections would be Hillary/Obama but that seems unlikely now as that contest is degenerating.

Well no, again I respectfully demur and again call in another blogger to speak for me. See:

Perhaps we're both wrong however. Maybe we should halt the election and crown Vince Cable. Everyone thinks he's doing a grand job!

Affectionately (if platonically, particularly since you're neglecting that Saint of a husband) yours,

Norman

Vince Cable is a great guy - he's been good on policy and also is a decent human being. He came to the Livingston by-election and was absolutely fabulous - worked hard and was a joy to have around.
