Nick Clegg: We made a pledge, we didn't stick to it and for that I'm sorry

Two things from the last few days:

And, courtesy of Mark Pack

What Have the Lib Dems Done?

The heartfelt apology I've wanted to hear from Nick for a very long time. He needed to say it and, as apologies go, it was one of the best I've ever heard. I'm really, really proud of him.

And the book that shows why we're in this Government game, even when it's bloody hard, agonising and heartbreaking. We are doing good stuff.

Betrayed everyone* who voted for them, including myself.

* I exclude those without principles, of course.

Sorry, Nick.... far too little and far too late.

Yes, you have lost my trust, and my vote. It isn't enough to say you're sorry that you made the pledge, but then try and row back by saying that there was no alternative.

There WAS an alternative. You said that you would not vote for an increase in tuition fees under any circumstances, and that's what you should have stuck to. If there was one defining issue that your SHOULD and COULD have made a stand on, this was it.

Perhaps you could have found the money by not carrying on funding for Trident renewal, or taxing the rich more, or cutting back on some other area.

If you honestly think that much of the 50% of your support which has disappeared since the GE are going to be induced to return by an apology which essentially says you are more sorry for having been wrong footed politically, than you are for actually abandoning a principled stand which was morally right, then I'm sorry but there is no hope for you or your party.
