Willie Rennie marks one year as leader

A year ago today, at around this time, I was standing on the shores of the Firth of Forth in North Queensferry watching Willie Rennie do his media interviews after becoming leader of the Scottish Liberal Democrats.

Personally, he's had a marvellous year. His rating could hardly be higher within the party. People might not want to go leafletting with him, but they trust, respect and like him. He's relentlessly criss-crossed the country visiting members and attending their events and campaigns - and, exhausting though it is, you can tell he's enjoying himself.

He's had the First Minister on the ropes on a fair few occasions and has successfully made the case for policy change on Scotland's colleges.

I did a wee retrospective of his first year over on Liberal Democrat Voice last night.Feel free to go and have a wee read and remember some of the highlights. He is exactly what the party needs right now and I'm sure the best of his leadership is yet to come.  He's got the strategic vision, the knowledge and experience to put it into practice and is a genuine and likeable character. I wouldn't want you to think he's perfect because he can be darned infuriating at times, especially when he's criticising my driving, but he's one of that rare breed of politicians who stay strongly rooted in the real world.
